Requirements for Document Authentication

All documents such as Adoption, Trademarks, Non-Governmental Organizations, Foundations, or individual power of representation, property rights, court decisions, wedding or divorce certificates, etc. that have to be used in Ethiopia should be authenticated by the Embassy of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in Washington, D.C. If all the necessary requirements are fulfilled the service could be provided on the same business day.

Mailing Instruction

  • All applications to be submitted by mail must be sent via an envelope with a TRACKING NUMBER. The application must also have a self-addressed prepaid FEDEX, UPS, or USPS EXPRESS MAIL return envelope.

  • All applications with a return envelope MUST HAVE TRACKING NUMBERS. If you send any ordinary mail without tracking numbers it will not be processed and will be sent back to the sender unprocessed.

  • Track it online at the respective mailing company's website to ensure it has been received by the Embassy. Please do not call to find out if it has been received.

  • Please track your application online using a return mailing tracking number at the respective mailing company after two or three business days that we received your application to know that it has been sent back to you!

  • You need not call our embassy after you have traced the arrival of your mail.

    A. For U.S. Citizens and Other Nationals

  • Notarized and authenticated documents by the Secretary of State of the State which issued the document;

  • Authentication of the same document by the U.S. Department of State, Click here for Authentication requirements of the US Department of State

  • Copy of valid passport.

  • Service fee of $94.80 per document in money order or Cashiers Check or Certified bank check made payable to Embassy of Ethiopia

  • A self addressed return envelope which has a tracking number (FEDEX, UPS, or USPS EXPRESS MAIL) with it. (for those using mail service);

  • A completed application form filled out in ink. Click here to download. (The form can be filled out online. The form should be printed and with necessary documents should be sent or presented in person with the proper payment in the form of a money order.)

If all the necessary requirements are fulfilled, the service will be provided on the next two or three business day.

    B. For Ethiopians and Holders of an Ethiopian Origin ID

  • Notarized and authenticated documents by the Secretary of State of the State which issued the document;

  • Authentication of the same document by the U.S. Department of State, Click here for Authentication requirements of the US Department of State

  • Copy of valid Ethiopian passport for Ethiopians

  • Copy of Ethiopian origin ID Card for foreign nationals of Ethiopian Origin

  • Service fee of $58.80 per document in money order or Cashiers Check or Certified bank check made payable to Embassy of Ethiopia.

  • A self addressed return envelope which has a tracking number (FEDEX, UPS, or USPS EXPRESS MAIL) with it. (for those using mail service);

  • A completed application form filled out in ink. Click here to download. (The form can be filled out online. The form should be printed and with necessary documents should be sent to the embassy or presented in person at the embassy with the proper payment in the form of a money order.)

If all requirements are fulfilled; the service will be provided within 30 minutes.

2. Authenticating Documents Originating in Ethiopia

Prior to applying at the Embassy of Ethiopia for authentication of documents originating in Ethiopia, the documents have to be authenticated first by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.

  • Copy of valid Ethiopian passport for Ethiopian nationals

  • Copy of Ethiopian origin ID Card for foreign nationals of Ethiopian origin

  • Service fee of $58.80 for Ethiopians and holder of Ethiopian Origin ID Card in money order or Cashiers Check or Certified bank check made payable to Embassy of Ethiopia.

  • Service fee of $94.80 for foreign nationals in money order or Cashiers Check or Certified bank check made payable to Embassy of Ethiopia.

  • A self addressed return envelope which has a tracking number (FEDEX, UPS, or USPS EXPRESS MAIL) with it. (for those using mail service);

3. Power of Attorney (Wikilina)

    A. For Ethiopians and Holders of Ethiopian Origin ID

In cases where the applicant signs the Power of Attorney in front of a consular officer at the Embassy, :

  • Document of the Power of attorney that will then be signed in front of a consular officer;

  • Copy of valid Ethiopian passport (for Ethiopian passport holder);

  • Copy of Green Card or I-94;

  • Copy of Ethiopian origin ID Card (for foreign nationals of Ethiopian Origin)

  • Service fee of $61.20 per document in money order or Cashiers Check or Certified bank check made payable to Embassy of Ethiopia.

In cases where the Power of Attorney is sent to the Embassy by mail:

  • Notarized Document of power of attorney by a recognized notary office;

  • Copy of valid Ethiopian passport (for Ethiopian passport holder);

  • Copy of a Green Card or I-94;

  • Copy of Ethiopian origin ID Card (for foreigners who are holding Ethiopian origin ID card);

  • Service fee $61.20 for each authentication payable to the Embassy of Ethiopia in money order Cashiers Check or Certified bank Check;

    B. For U.S. and Other Nationals

  • Authenticated documents of the power of attorney by the State Secretary Office in which the applicant is residing.

  • Authentication of the same document by the U.S. Department of State,

  • Copy of passport.

  • Service fee of $94.80 per document payable to the Embassy of Ethiopia in money order, Cashiers Check, or Certified bank Check;

  • A self addressed return envelope which has a tracking number (FEDEX, UPS, or USPS EXPRESS MAIL) with it. (for those using mail service);
