Agriculture

Agriculture is a sector with bumper harvests of cash and food crops both in rain fed and irrigation system in Oromiya. Despite the vast rain fed arable land available in the region, only a small fraction has been cultivated so far. The region also owns a high potential of land to be irrigated. Studies indicate that about 532,762 hectares of land is feasible for irrigation.

Crop Development

Crops of any denomination could grow in commercial scale in Oromia because of its diverse agro-ecological zones. The region has broad genetic diversity among its coffee varieties. Aroma and flavors are some of the unique characteristics found in these coffees. Nine different bean varieties are cultivated in the different growing areas, all with distinctive tastes, sizes, shapes, and colors.

Oromiya also possesses suitable ecology for many spices be it indigenous or exotic to be developed in small or at large scale. The little supply obtained from naturally growing plants and from small-scattered peasant holdings could not notably satisfy the ever-increasing market demand.

Floriculture

Ethiopia is considered to be one of the best quality flower producers of African countries but flower production and exportation still at its infant stage though the market potential is very high in the world particularly in Europe and the Middle East countries. In the past few companies have been producing and exporting a very limited volume and types of flowers. Golden Rose and Ethio-Dream projects are worth mentioning

What is encouraging however, at present is that more domestic and foreign private investors in the form of direct investment are joining the sector. Most of these projects are found in Oromia because the region has more favorable soil and climate for growing all types of flowers. It has also high labor concentration and access to international markets. So Investors can take these unique advantages if they come and invest in the region.

Forest Development

Oromiya, a land being suitable for forest development out of which nearly 5 percent is covered with natural forest is the custodian of what remains of the forest resources of the country. As some studies indicate, 21,503 hectares of land are readily available for forestry development. In Ilubabour alone, there are 4651 hectares of land suitable for commercial rubber plantation

Livestock

Ethiopia is one of the top ranking countries in the world in terms of abundance livestock resources. It is estimated that there are 35million cattle, 25million sheep, 18million goats 7million Aquinas, one million camels and 53 million poultry. Almost 52 percent of the country's total population of livestock is found in Oromia. However, this important wealth is still unexploited. Therefore, investments in this area are potentially attractive for livestock breeding, production and processing of meat and eggs.

Fishery

The region's annual fish production potential is estimated at 17,500 tons. Rivers such as Dabus, Dhidhessa, Guder, Muger, Jemma, the Upper Baro, Gibe, Genale, Wabi Shebelle, Fafem, Awash, Segnen and lakes like Abijata , Ziway, Haromaya, Wonchi, Shala and Abaya are sites for fishery development in Oromiya.
Tilapia, catfish, barbus and cyprinids are some of the species that could attract the attention of investors for modern fishery development.

Apiculture (Bee-keeping)

Apiculture is a practice that is basically linked with the forest belt areas although it is considered as sideline. Traditional hives are mostly practiced in Jimma, Ilubabour, Bale and Arsi zones but the yearly output is very low. The sector is one of the promising areas of investment with plenty of room for production and export of honey and wax.
