There
has been accelerated development performance in Ethiopia : World Bank
Addis Ababa, February 6, 2006 () - Country
Director of the World Bank for Ethiopia and the Sudan said there has been
accelerated development performance in Ethiopia over the past two years while
economic growth has been about 10 per cent.
The Country Director Ishac Diwan said the
overall economic performance of Ethiopia over the past 10 years has been
relatively good.
In an interview with Ethiopia Today, a
bi-monthly English language magazine, Diwan said the major components of the
development strategy include an emphasis on the complementarities between small
town and rural development, a focus on growth centers and growth poles, and more
region-specific growth strategies built on competitive advantages.
He said there is also a can do attitude
reflected in the special emphasis given particularly promising value chains.
Diwan said development requires a close
partnership between the private and the public sectors such as the horticulture
and roses, but also extending to tourism, garment, leather products or the construction
sectors.
He said currently the World Banks efforts
could be grouped into four broad areas, namely, infrastructure, capacity
building and governance with particular emphasis on community development, rural
development and food security.
The Country Director said the infrastructure
base of the country is very low, and thus about 50 per cent of the Banks
intervention is directed to the development to this sector, in particular roads,
energy, water and irrigation.
